One of the most challenging experiences of parents with their children is taking them to the dentist for routine dental care or other dental services. The fact that the child has had some experiences with doctors will always make the child have fear when the word doctor or dentist is mentioned. However, preparing your child before going to the dentist is very important since it makes the child comfortable and happy while going to the dentist whenever you have an appointment. The following are some of the ways on how to prepare your child for a visit to the dentist:
1. Make the child understand why the dentist has to touch him or her.
The greatest fear with any child begins when the dentist stretches his hand to touch your child. You must explain to your child why the dentist has to touch her and why it’s essential. The child must understand this before you get to the dentist. Use simple language when talking to this child so that you make things even more comfortable. Ensure that you tell the child that the dentist will touch him or her because the dentist needs to examine his or her teeth, but the child should not panic because you will be there. Such words make the child feel more secure before going to the dentist.
2. Have a dentist-patient game at home before you go to the dentist.
As a parent, you have been to the dentist several times. For this reason, you know whatever goes on in the dentist room during any dental care visit. When at home, pretend to be a dentist while your child is the patient. While playing this game, try to make your child understand that whatever you are doing with him or she will not be different from what the dentist will be doing when you get to the dentist. Just examine the child’s teeth the same way the dentist does to show the child that the dentist will only do the usual things that you will have done with the child during the dentist-patient game.
3. Examine your child’s teeth at home first.
Once you examine your child’s teeth before he or she gets to the dentist, it makes the child feel more comfortable when the dentist is examining the teeth. Just lay your child on your lap and carefully look at his or her teeth as if you were a dentist. It makes the child feel at ease while the dentist is examining him or her.
4. Have a positive attitude towards the day.
When you are talking with any person about the day to visit the dentist, including with your child, ensure that every single word coming out of your mouth is positive. Do not have a negative attitude towards that day since your child will also have the same opinion. Make your child have a positive attitude towards the dentist and even towards that day to make the child comfortable when you visit the dentist.
5. Dress the child comfortably
While visiting the dentist, ensure that you have dressed your child in the kind of clothing that will make him or her comfortable. Avoid clothes that are too tight on your child. However, loose clothes are the best at any time you are taking your child to the dentist.
